Goizueta Distinguished Presidential Fellow\, alongside Marysol Quevedo\, associate professor of musicology at the Frost School of Music. \nExploring themes of immigration\, justice\, and love\, the Afro-Cuban jazz band OKAN takes its name from the word for “heart” in Santería. With vocals in Spanish\, Yoruba\, and Spanglish\, the band is led by Havana-born violinist and vocalist Elizabeth Rodríguez and her wife\, percussionist and vocalist Magdelys Savigne\, from Santiago de Cuba. \nThis event marks the culmination of Ruthie Meadows’ semester-long residency as the Roberto C. Goizueta Distinguished Presidential Fellow at the Cuban Heritage Collection.
