SUMMARY:Royal Dames of Cancer Research to Kick Off 2026 Tiara Ball Season With ‘Dancing Queens’ Fall Luncheon & Fashion Show on Oct. 1
DESCRIPTION:Royal Dames of Cancer Research\, Inc. will launch its 2026 Tiara Ball season with the annual Royal Dames of Cancer Research Fall Luncheon & Fashion Show on Thursday\, Oct. 1\, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lauderdale Yacht Club in Fort Lauderdale. \nThe Fall Luncheon will kick off the organization’s “Dancing Queens”-themed Tiara Ball season\, which will culminate with the 56th Annual Tiara Ball on Nov. 14 at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa. The Tiara Ball\, chaired by Bonnie Mitten\, is Royal Dames’ primary annual fundraiser in support of its mission to fund cancer research. \nThe luncheon and fashion show will celebrate fashion\, friendship and philanthropy while supporting the Royal Dames’ mission of funding cancer research. Professional models will take to the runway for a true fashion show experience\, showcasing high-end couture and elegant fashions from renowned luxury designers\, presented by The Colonnade Outlets. \n“The Fall Luncheon is a wonderful opportunity to bring our community together as we begin another Tiara Ball season and continue the important work at the heart of the Royal Dames\,” said Sophia Mylona\, president of Royal Dames of Cancer Research. \nGuests will also have opportunities to support the mission through raffles and live and silent auctions featuring an array of experiences and packages. Highlights include a three-hour private yacht cruise for up to 10 guests aboard My Amore 59\, complete with champagne\, fine wine and gourmet hors d’oeuvres\, as well as a full event-planning package for up to 50 guests in South Florida\, including event design\, budget planning\, vendor coordination\, floor plan design\, itinerary creation and day-of-event management\, and more. \nRoyal Dames of Cancer Research traces its history to Dr. Joel Warren’s request for $250\,000 to support cancer research. Warren approached Fort Lauderdale resident Theresa Castro\, who was inspired to create an organization dedicated to funding cancer research. One hundred of Castro’s friends each pledged $2\,500\, leading to the creation of Royal Dames of Cancer Research\, Inc. in 1969. Since its founding\, Royal Dames has contributed more than $7.68 million in support of cancer research at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). The organization continues to support cancer research in pursuit of a cure. \nThe Royal Dames of Cancer Research Fall Luncheon & Fashion Show will take place Thursday\, Oct. 1\, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lauderdale Yacht Club\, 1725 SE 12th St.\, Fort Lauderdale\, FL 33316. \nTickets\, tables and sponsorship opportunities are available at rdfall26.givesmart.com. SUMMARY:Abstraction as Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Part document\, part subjective storytelling\, visual art illustrates and offers nuance to significant moments in U.S. history. From portraits of well-known leaders to history paintings that speak to the sacrifice and strength of the American people\, the power of paint to render subjects remains unquestionable. \nThe act of painting can also make history. Through hard edges and expressive forms\, American artists re-imagined painting and used abstraction as a mechanism to consider the human body\, natural environs\, architecture\, emotion\, and an economy of line. \nThis exhibition is not meant to be exhaustive but intended to highlight the breadth of painterly abstraction in the United States. Following the 1950s\, it became clear that the art world turned to the U.S. for ingenuity and boundary-breaking abstract art forms. From trends that arose in Havana and made it to the U.S. through exile to experiments developed in New York and Los Angeles\, the legacy of American abstraction evolves as rich and varied. The featured artists include Young-Il Ahn\, Sam Gilliam\, Carmen Herrera\, Hans Hofmann\, Virginia Jaramillo\, Lloyd Kiva New\, William de Kooning\, George Morrison\, Noemí Ruiz\, Zilia Sánchez\, and Vaughn Spann. \nOn July 4\, 2026\, the U.S. commemorates and celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This historic milestone offers an opportunity to pause and reflect on this nation’s past\, honor the contributions of Americans\, and to look ahead toward the future we aspire to create for the next generation and beyond. The legacy of painterly abstraction in the U.S. offers a distinctive way to celebrate the creativity and innovation that defines the American spirit. \nImage: Virginia Jaramillo\, Sidereal Inscriptions #1-213\, 1988. SUMMARY:PETA Fish Amnesty Day Gear Trade In
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Fish Amnesty Day\, PETA is offering people a chance to trade in their fishing gear for a trash fishing kit. Trash Fishing is a fun\, cruelty-free activity in which people “fish” for trash instead of fish. \nOur trade-in reminds everyone that fish and other sea life are not inanimate objects – they’re living\, feeling individuals. PETA is asking everyone with fishing gear to participate in our trade-in and to start trash fishing instead\, which actually helps animals and our environment\, rather than causing harm to them.
