SUMMARY:Clara Toro: Everyday Joy
DESCRIPTION:Clara Toro makes work that documents a changing Miami. With an eye towards history and personal narratives\, Toro photographs people in their homes\, at their places of work\, and the mundane but deeply relatable experiences of daily life. This exhibition\, the artist’s first solo presentation\, includes previous work as well as recently commissioned work to coincide with the re-opening of the Freedom Tower\, a National Historic Landmark under the stewardship of Miami Dade College. \nIn honor of the 100-year anniversary of the Freedom Tower\, Toro photographed many Miami residents to complement an oral history project led by the staff of the Museum of Art and Design. In producing these black and white portraits\, Toro encouraged participants to smile and express joy as a symbol of resilience. She also invited subjects to be more contemplative to honor the struggles they endure. These portraits form the core of this exhibition and other featured photographs offer context for Toro’s formidable practice. Born in Medellín\, Colombia\, Toro lives and works in Miami. \nOpen by appointment only. Under the creative direction of Max Strang FAIA\, the Miami-based firm continues to advance many of the timeless concepts set forth by the famed Sarasota School of Architecture. Strang’s early exposure to that mid-century modernism movement resulted in a deep respect for structures that are intimately connected to their surroundings as they celebrate the Florida climate. \nThis second monograph of Strang’s contains a collection of conceptual drawings\, texts\, and professional photography that underscores the ongoing relevance and importance of regional modernist design. It is the architectural responses to site and climate that infuse the specific designs with character and identity\, resulting in a uniquely Floridian version of modernism. \nAbout:\nMax Strang is the Founding Principal of STRANG. Through his work and discourse\, he has consistently underscored the ongoing relevance and importance of regional modernism to an international audience. In 2016\, Strang was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. He has also received the Silver Medal from the Miami Chapter of the AIA and the Medal of Honor for Design from the Florida Chapter of the AIA\, the highest honors the respective organizations can bestow. Strang provides ongoing strategic and creative oversight to the firm and serves as an engaging mentor for its architects\, designers and project managers. \nAdditionally\, he has led design studios at the University of Miami\, Florida International University and the University of Florida. Prior to launching the firm in 2001\, Strang worked in the offices of Zaha Hadid and SHoP Architects. The architect of greatest influence\, however\, was Florida’s Gene Leedy\, a pioneering member of the Sarasota School of Architecture. Strang was raised in a home designed by Leedy and later interned at his Winter Haven office. Strang is a graduate of the University of Florida and Columbia University.
