SUMMARY:Abstraction as Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Part document\, part subjective storytelling\, visual art illustrates and offers nuance to significant moments in U.S. history. From portraits of well-known leaders to history paintings that speak to the sacrifice and strength of the American people\, the power of paint to render subjects remains unquestionable. \nThe act of painting can also make history. Through hard edges and expressive forms\, American artists re-imagined painting and used abstraction as a mechanism to consider the human body\, natural environs\, architecture\, emotion\, and an economy of line. \nThis exhibition is not meant to be exhaustive but intended to highlight the breadth of painterly abstraction in the United States. Following the 1950s\, it became clear that the art world turned to the U.S. for ingenuity and boundary-breaking abstract art forms. From trends that arose in Havana and made it to the U.S. through exile to experiments developed in New York and Los Angeles\, the legacy of American abstraction evolves as rich and varied. The featured artists include Young-Il Ahn\, Sam Gilliam\, Carmen Herrera\, Hans Hofmann\, Virginia Jaramillo\, Lloyd Kiva New\, William de Kooning\, George Morrison\, Noemí Ruiz\, Zilia Sánchez\, and Vaughn Spann. \nOn July 4\, 2026\, the U.S. commemorates and celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This historic milestone offers an opportunity to pause and reflect on this nation’s past\, honor the contributions of Americans\, and to look ahead toward the future we aspire to create for the next generation and beyond. The legacy of painterly abstraction in the U.S. offers a distinctive way to celebrate the creativity and innovation that defines the American spirit. \nImage: Virginia Jaramillo\, Sidereal Inscriptions #1-213\, 1988.
SUMMARY:Bloody Waters: The Zaragozana and Cuban Piracy in the 1820s
DESCRIPTION:During the early 19th century\, as Spain’s empire in the Americas began to unravel\, the Caribbean became a battleground for privateers\, pirates\, and imperial powers. \nJoin us for an online book talk with author Glenn M. Stein as he discusses his latest work\, “Bloody Waters: The Zaragozana and Cuban Piracy in the 1820s.” \nIn “Bloody Waters\,” Stein draws on groundbreaking archival research from eight countries to uncover the dramatic history of Cuban piracy during this turbulent era. Centered on the pursuit and capture of the infamous pirate captain Cayetano Aragones aboard the schooner Zaragozana\, the book traces the rise and fall of piracy along Cuba’s coasts through vivid storytelling\, newly uncovered historical evidence\, and striking visual materials. \nStein will present the research behind the book and explore the political\, maritime\, and social forces that shaped one of the Caribbean’s most fascinating and often overlooked chapters of history\, the Age of Sail. Following the presentation\, Amanda Moreno-Schroeder\, Esperanza Bravo de Varona Chair and director of the Cuban Heritage Collection will moderate a live audience Q&A. \nAbout the Presenter\nGlenn “Marty” Stein is a polar and maritime historian\, having sailed in the Arctic\, to the Falkland Islands\, South Georgia Island\, and many Antarctic destinations. Stein has researched maritime and polar history since 1975\, and regularly publishes in journals\, magazines\, and online. He is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and Royal Canadian Geographical Society\, life member of the American Polar Society\, member of the Orders and Medals Research Society in the United Kingdom\, and the Life Saving Awards Research Society in the United Kingdom. \nThe author of over 70 articles and papers\, Stein’s award-winning book\, “Discovering the North-West Passage: The Four-Year Arctic Odyssey of H.M.S. Investigator and the McClure Expedition” (McFarland\, 2015) was launched at the Library of Congress. \n“Bloody Waters: The Zaragozana and Cuban Piracy in the 1820s” (McFarland\, 2026) represents groundbreaking research into the history and genealogy of the hunters and the hunted of Cuban piracy. The narrative follows swashbuckling action\, tense trials\, and somber executions\, chronicling the attempt to end the scourge.
