DESCRIPTION:Join artist Cristina Lei Rodriguez and MOAD team members for a new type of workshop. During MOAD Stories\, participants will enjoy a special curated tour of the Freedom Tower\, focused on personal reflection and storytelling. Following the tour\, attendees will gather in the Knight Skylight Gallery for conversation and artmaking. All ages are welcome. Museum admission and workshop are free for all those who register. \nCristina Lei Rodriguez is an American visual artist known for an expansive practice that includes installation\, photography\, sculpture\, public art\, and more recently\, painting. Rodriguez’s artworks are influenced by her identity and experience in the cultural landscape of the American tropics. Her perspective comes through in the landscapes she creates that position nature as a tool for deep reflection about accumulation\, decay\, transformation\, and texture. The works are variously textured- like layers of ground sedimentation- created from materials that are plastic and industrial and\, on the other end of the spectrum\, precious and earthy. \nVisitors to the Freedom Tower may park for free in the MDC garage at 500 NE Second Avenue\, between NE Fifth and NE Sixth Streets. \nThe Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC may document the event\, including its attendees. Runners\, walkers\, families\, community leaders\, wheelchairs and strollers of all ages will come together in the beautiful Pompano Beach Community Park to raise funds and awareness to support Broward Children’s Center. \nThe event will feature a family-friendly 5K\, children’s activities\, live entertainment\, raffles\, an awards ceremony and more. \nDuring the event\, Broward Children’s Center executives will present the latest care innovations and technological upgrades at the facility\, including new integrations of advanced ventilator systems\, Masimo patient monitoring\, and PointClickCare software. These upgrades now allow for connected\, real-time patient monitoring and offsite physician access to medical histories\, capabilities unique to Broward Children’s Center among freestanding pediatric care facilities in Florida. \nChildren receiving care at Broward Children’s Center\, including those in electric wheelchairs\, will participate in the 5K route with assistance from more than 40 volunteers representing the International Institute for Health Care Professionals and Broward College’s Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) Program. Volunteers will help wheel participants and support race-day logistics. \nMiles for Smiles will benefit Broward Children’s Center\, a nonprofit organization that has been serving infants\, children\, and young adults with special needs since 1971. Proceeds will support Broward Children’s Center’s crucial programs and medical\, developmental\, and therapeutic services designed to meet the specific needs of infants\, children and young adults who are developmentally disabled and medically fragile and their families. \nParticipants can join the event as an individual or a team and conduct online fundraising prior to race day. Miles for Smiles race day check-in opens at 8 a.m. and the 5K will begin at 9 a.m. After the race\, an awards ceremony and a raffle will take place.
