SUMMARY:Movement\, Sound\, and Abstraction
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) for an evening of embodied exploration where art\, movement\, and wellness converge. \nPerformance artist and educator Smita Sens works at the intersection of sculpture\, dance-based performance\, and advanced technology\, researching how the body internalizes its environment and the weight of lived experience. Her practice explores how the human body becomes a living document — storing tension\, movement\, memory\, and emotion across a lifetime. \nSens will lead visitors through the Abstraction as Legacy exhibition\, drawing connections between the works on view and the language of her own practice\, inviting us to see abstract art not as something to be decoded\, but as something to be felt\, moved through\, and moved by. \nFollowing the tour\, the evening deepens with Ressonnance\, an immersive sound and wellness collective founded by YoungArts Jazz Trumpet Awardee Alum Stéphane Clément and sonic architect Nicolaus Gelin. Clément weaves his German Haitian heritage into a rich jazz foundation\, while Gelin crafts soundscapes that dissolve the boundary between music and transcendence. Together\, they will compose a live response to the space and the works within it. \nIn collaboration\, Sens and Ressonnance will guide guests through a performance that functions as an invitation to let the body lead\, to listen\, and to find in sound and motion a new way of moving through art\, memory\, and meaning. \nThis program offers an alternative way of navigating abstraction\, not through the mind alone\, but through the body\, the breath\, and the resonance of sound. \nThe Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC may document the event\, including its attendees. By entering the area\, and/or participating in the event\, you consent to the recording and its use in any form.

SUMMARY:Abstraction as Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Part document\, part subjective storytelling\, visual art illustrates and offers nuance to significant moments in U.S. history. From portraits of well-known leaders to history paintings that speak to the sacrifice and strength of the American people\, the power of paint to render subjects remains unquestionable. \nThe act of painting can also make history. Through hard edges and expressive forms\, American artists re-imagined painting and used abstraction as a mechanism to consider the human body\, natural environs\, architecture\, emotion\, and an economy of line. \nThis exhibition is not meant to be exhaustive but intended to highlight the breadth of painterly abstraction in the United States. Following the 1950s\, it became clear that the art world turned to the U.S. for ingenuity and boundary-breaking abstract art forms. From trends that arose in Havana and made it to the U.S. through exile to experiments developed in New York and Los Angeles\, the legacy of American abstraction evolves as rich and varied. The featured artists include Young-Il Ahn\, Sam Gilliam\, Carmen Herrera\, Hans Hofmann\, Virginia Jaramillo\, Lloyd Kiva New\, William de Kooning\, George Morrison\, Noemí Ruiz\, Zilia Sánchez\, and Vaughn Spann. \nOn July 4\, 2026\, the U.S. commemorates and celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This historic milestone offers an opportunity to pause and reflect on this nation’s past\, honor the contributions of Americans\, and to look ahead toward the future we aspire to create for the next generation and beyond. The legacy of painterly abstraction in the U.S. offers a distinctive way to celebrate the creativity and innovation that defines the American spirit. \nImage: Virginia Jaramillo\, Sidereal Inscriptions #1-213\, 1988. Her practice examines how contemporary life is shaped and mythologized through images\, exploring the intersections of environmental crisis\, consumer spectacle\, politics\, and visual culture. \nHer first monograph\, FloodZone\, brought recognition for its portrayal of climate vulnerability and spectacle in South Florida. Floridas expanded this inquiry into a portrait of the state as a landscape of fantasy\, contradiction\, and power\, culminating in Floridas: Anastasia Samoylova and Walker Evans at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Image Cities examined media saturation\, advertising\, and visual excess in global urban spaces\, while her recent project Atlantic Coast retraces Berenice Abbott’s Route 1 journey in reverse\, from Florida to Maine. \nSamoylova’s work has been exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Saatchi Gallery\, C/O Berlin\, Fundación MAPFRE\, and the George Eastman Museum. Her work is held by MoMA\, The Met\, and Pérez Art Museum Miami\, among others.
