SUMMARY:Abstraction as Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Part document\, part subjective storytelling\, visual art illustrates and offers nuance to significant moments in U.S. history. From portraits of well-known leaders to history paintings that speak to the sacrifice and strength of the American people\, the power of paint to render subjects remains unquestionable. \nThe act of painting can also make history. Through hard edges and expressive forms\, American artists re-imagined painting and used abstraction as a mechanism to consider the human body\, natural environs\, architecture\, emotion\, and an economy of line. \nThis exhibition is not meant to be exhaustive but intended to highlight the breadth of painterly abstraction in the United States. Following the 1950s\, it became clear that the art world turned to the U.S. for ingenuity and boundary-breaking abstract art forms. From trends that arose in Havana and made it to the U.S. through exile to experiments developed in New York and Los Angeles\, the legacy of American abstraction evolves as rich and varied. The featured artists include Young-Il Ahn\, Sam Gilliam\, Carmen Herrera\, Hans Hofmann\, Virginia Jaramillo\, Lloyd Kiva New\, William de Kooning\, George Morrison\, Noemí Ruiz\, Zilia Sánchez\, and Vaughn Spann. \nOn July 4\, 2026\, the U.S. commemorates and celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This historic milestone offers an opportunity to pause and reflect on this nation’s past\, honor the contributions of Americans\, and to look ahead toward the future we aspire to create for the next generation and beyond. The legacy of painterly abstraction in the U.S. offers a distinctive way to celebrate the creativity and innovation that defines the American spirit. \nImage: Virginia Jaramillo\, Sidereal Inscriptions #1-213\, 1988. SUMMARY:Cita A Ciegas (Blind Date)
DESCRIPTION:What if the most random encounter of your life wasn’t random at all? \nIn Buenos Aires’ Plaza San Martín\, several people believe they are living separate lives: an impossible love\, a journey to London\, the collapse of a marriage\, a decision made too late. Yet an invisible thread binds them together. \nEvery encounter holds the possibility of countless endings. A fascinating theatrical puzzle in which the choices we make suggest the existence of multiple paths across the map of our lives. \nWith extraordinary sensitivity\, acclaimed Argentine playwright Mario Diament crafts a moving meditation on love\, time\, and the lives we might have lived. \nA deeply human and profoundly moving play that lingers in the memory long after the final scene has ended. It is no surprise\, then\, that more than twenty years after its 2003 premiere\, Blind Date continues to appear on stages around the world\, reaffirming its place in the international contemporary theatre repertoire. \nPerformed in Spanish\n(English-language supertitles will be provided for the Saturday\, September 19 performance) \nWhen: \nSeptember 17: 8:30 PM\nSeptember 18: 8:30 PM\nSeptember 19: 8:30 PM\nSeptember 20: 5:00 PM\nWhere: Sandrell Rivers Theater\, 6103 NW 7th Ave\, Miami\, FL 33127 \nTicket: $35 \nAge Recommendation \nRecommended for ages 13 and up. The play contains no explicit language\, sexual content\, or physical violence. Its themes—love\, destiny\, and the choices that shape our lives—are meaningful and accessible for teenagers and adults alike.
