SUMMARY:Meet at the Bridge
DESCRIPTION:Join the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the State’s purchase of the Miami-Dade County’s last remnant hammock—Arch Creek Park. \nOnce a lush forest housing indigenous people of the Tequesta and Seminole Tribes\, later the site of stagecoach stops\, boat tours\, and Sunday picnics\, Arch Creek is a magical place where the waters of the Everglades\, meet Biscayne Bay. \nThe very first car to enter Miami\, crossed the historic Arch Creek Natural Bridge\, part of the first road into Miami. Ironically\, later in the 20th Century\, the land was slated to become a Chrysler dealership. Thanks to the intervention of a group of concerned environmental advocates\, the Arch Creek Trust\, in 1973 the State of Florida purchased the land. On the very day of the land purchase\, the historic Arch Creek Natural Bridge collapsed under mysterious circumstances. \nThanks to the partnership between The Arch Creek Trust and Miami-Dade County Parks\, Recreation\, and Open Spaces\, the State designated historic site is now a wondrous Park\, housing a museum\, nature trails\, a reconstructed bridge\, and provides educational programming to the community provided by Miami EcoAdventures™. \nThe family-style festivities will include live music provided by Eric King and Joel Heinen\, children’s crafts\, archery\, historical nature walks\, coontie planting\, and food. A classic car and fire truck will be on display. Special guest presentations by Archeologist\, Bob Carr\, Director\, The Archeological and Historical Conservancy\, “3\,000 Years of Arch Creek Heritage” and Sandy Koi\, “The Atala Butterfly: Getting by with a little help from our friends”. Atala Butterfly poem reading by Hannah Lasky. \nAdmission is free. Food will be available for purchase. \nBring a book or two to donate to the Park’s Little Free Library book drive. \nArch Creek Park\n1855 NE 135th Street\, Miami\, FL 33181\nFor more information\, call 305-944-6111
