SUMMARY:Kislak Talks - Becoming Mexico City: Early Maps
DESCRIPTION:Join MOAD at the Freedom Tower for an engaging edition of the Kislak Talks series\, Becoming Mexico City: Early Maps of the Oldest Continuous Metropolis in the Americas featuring Dr. Delia Cosentino\, Professor of History of Art and Architecture at DePaul University in Chicago. \nThis talk features a series of maps made during the first 100 years of Spanish colonial rule to show how the capital city of Mexico has taken shape\, both in terms of urban planning—and in the imagination. Cartography by both native and European artists demonstrates how the capital of the Aztec Empire\, called Tenochtitlan\, provided the literal foundations for the early modern Spanish capital that replaced it following the European invasion in the 1520s. The maps showcase Aztec migration and mythology\, the incursion of Hispanic elements into native spaces\, and other intriguing aspects of the oldest continuous metropolis in the Americas. \nDr. Delia Cosentino is Professor of History of Art and Architecture at DePaul University in Chicago\, specializing in the visual culture of Greater Mexico. She is currently a Mellon Foundation Long-Term Fellow at the Newberry Library (2025-2026)\, researching Aztec gladiators. Cosentino co-authored Resurrecting Tenochtitlan: Imagining the Aztec Capital in Modern Mexico City (UT Press\, 2023) with Adriana Zavala (Tufts University) and wrote Las Joyas de Zinacantepec: Arte Colonial en el Monasterio de San Miguel (Colegio Mexiquense\, Mexico\, 2007). She also curated Ceramic Trees of Life from Mexico (Fowler Museum\, UCLA\, 2003)\, Reverence Renewed: Colonial Andean Art from the Thoma Collection (DePaul Art Museum [DPAM]\, 2009)\, and Nexo/Nexus: Latin American Connections in the Midwest (DPAM\, 2016). \nVisitors to the Freedom Tower may park for free in the MDC garage at 500 NE Second Avenue\, between NE Fifth and NE Sixth Streets (designated Building 7 on MDC’s Wolfson Campus parking map). \nThe Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC may document the event\, including its attendees. By entering the area\, and/or participating in the event\, you consent to the recording and its use in any form. \nThe programs at the Freedom Tower\, operated by the Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at Miami Dade College (MDC)\, are made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council\, the Miami-Dade County Mayor\, and the Board of County Commissioners. SUMMARY:William Osorio Open Studio
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the final Open Studio of William Osorio’s artist residency at MDC’s Padrón Campus\, featuring recent works created at the studio and an opportunity to engage with the artist. \nMiami-based artist William Osorio is currently in residence at Miami Dade College’s Padrón Campus\, creating new works and engaging with students\, other campus groups\, and members of the public during his residency\, during which visitors are welcome to step into the studio and observe and interact with the artist at work\, engaging in conversations about process\, multidisciplinary artmaking\, and the role of the artist within learning institutions. \nWilliam Osorio (b. 1989\, Holguín\, Cuba) is a Cuban-born American artist investigating human behavior and the convergence of identity and place. Osorio’s affinity for the power of the arts started in his youth. He studied briefly at the School of Fine Arts in Holguin (2005-2007) before emigrating to the US\, where he further developed his skills on a self-taught basis. \nOsorio’s practice involves art history\, literature\, and psychology. His work examines the complex relationship between power and knowledge and often incorporates a reinterpretation of myths. His paintings critically address themes of migration and identity\, while also exploring the communicative channels between the art historical canon and urgent issues of contemporary society. Known primarily as a painter\, the artist increasingly incorporates different media into his work and turns to his own family for artistic inspiration. Past works include wholly abstract compositions as well as portraits of well-known Cuban writers. More recently\, his work includes portraits of his partner and reflections on new fatherhood. \nRefreshments will be served. \nFree parking is available at MDC’s Padrón Campus flat parking lot located at 2501 SW 6TH Street\, Miami\, FL 33135. \nThe Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC may document the event\, including its attendees. By entering the area\, and/or participating in the event\, you consent to the recording and its use in any form. \nMOAD’s programs are made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council\, the Miami-Dade County Mayor\, and Board of County Commissioners. SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Cristina Lei Rodriguez: Baroque Islands
DESCRIPTION:MOAD and Cristina Lei Rodriguez will host an opening reception in honor of the artist’s new exhibition\, Baroque Islands\, on MDC’s Hialeah Campus. \nCristina Lei Rodriguez: Baroque Islands presents new and recent paintings. For years\, the artist has been combining sculpture\, installation\, painting\, and photographic scans in her work. As opposed to including different media\, this exhibition offers a special opportunity to consider her painting practice\, with its dense layers evoking a multitude of forms. Beneath each layer of material\, is another layer that offers a glimpse into an alternative world. Each painting is its own island\, its own space\, where a mix of materials from beads to paint and lacquer combine to make glistening surfaces suggesting both built and natural environments. \nTo create baroque art or to exist in a baroque space can mean many things. A term often associated with seventeenth-century Europe; baroque art and architecture took on new forms in the Americas. Baroque art can include a juxtaposition of contrasting elements as well as embellishment. It can be exuberant and emotional. Although it is most often used when speaking of historic visual\, literary\, and performance-based arts\, manifestations of contemporary baroque exist all around us\, including in the work of Cristina Lei Rodriguez. \nRaised in Miami\, the artist’s family lineage extends to Cuba and Japan\, and she spent extended time as a child and a young adult in Hawai’i visiting her grandmother. Islands are personal for the artist. Rich and varied landscapes inform the artist’s work as does overlapping notions of place. From these national and international boundaries to her own backyard where plentiful plants multiply in the abundant humidity of Miami\, the artist draws inspiration from complex textures\, sumptuous colors\, and intricate details. \nThis exhibition was organized by the Museum of Art and Design at Miami Dade College. \nParking at MDC’s Hialeah Campus \nThe Art Gallery is located directly across from the Building 5 garage. \nThe main vehicular entrance to the campus is located along West 17th Court before reaching 46th Street. Parking is available for all Miami Dade College students\, staff\, faculty\, and visitors in our recently constructed parking garage and flat lots. All individuals using campus parking facilities must abide by the College parking guidelines. SUMMARY:MOAD Stories with Cristina Lei Rodriguez
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Cristina Lei Rodriguez and MOAD team members for a new type of workshop. During MOAD Stories\, participants will enjoy a special curated tour of the Freedom Tower\, focused on personal reflection and storytelling. Following the tour\, attendees will gather in the Knight Skylight Gallery for conversation and artmaking. All ages are welcome. Museum admission and workshop are free for all those who register. \nCristina Lei Rodriguez is an American visual artist known for an expansive practice that includes installation\, photography\, sculpture\, public art\, and more recently\, painting. Rodriguez’s artworks are influenced by her identity and experience in the cultural landscape of the American tropics. Her perspective comes through in the landscapes she creates that position nature as a tool for deep reflection about accumulation\, decay\, transformation\, and texture. The works are variously textured- like layers of ground sedimentation- created from materials that are plastic and industrial and\, on the other end of the spectrum\, precious and earthy. \nVisitors to the Freedom Tower may park for free in the MDC garage at 500 NE Second Avenue\, between NE Fifth and NE Sixth Streets. They are sponsored in part by the State of Florida through the Division of Arts and Culture\, and with generous support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The Miami Herald is a media sponsor of MOAD’s programming.

SUMMARY:From the Andes to Cuba and Back: Visual Cultures of Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Join MOAD at the newly reopened Freedom Tower for an engaging edition of the Kislak Talks series\, featuring a conversation with scholar and author Ananda Cohen-Aponte and MOAD’s director\, Amy Galpin. \nReferring to the Andean paintings and textiles in the Kislak Center at the Freedom Tower\, Cohen-Aponte will discuss the intersections of visual culture\, coloniality\, and resistance within the Andean region. Her talk will explore how these works reflect the complex social\, political\, and spiritual dynamics of migration\, and how they blend the cultural heritage of immigrants with colonial influences to create a unique visual language of identity and adaptation. \nAnanda Cohen-Aponte is an Associate Professor of History of Art at Cornell University and a recent Getty Fellow for the 2024-2025 academic year. The author of Heaven\, Hell\, and Everything in Between: Murals of the Colonial Andes and Reimagining Lost Visual Archives of Black and Indigenous Resistance\, her research examines racial formation\, cross-cultural exchange\, and the legacies of colonialism in Latinx art. \nThis event celebrates the newly installed Kislak Center exhibition\, Languages of Migration. \nThe Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC may document the event\, including its attendees. By entering the area\, and/or participating in the event\, you consent to the recording and its use in any form.

SUMMARY:Gonzalo Hernandez Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join MOAD and Gonzalo Hernandez at MDC’s Padrón Campus for a reception celebrating Hernandez’s artist residency. \nThroughout the summer\, Hernandez will create new work at MDC’s Padrón Campus art gallery. Hernandez’ practice reveals personal narratives\, institutional tensions\, and broader ideas about belonging and place. \nMOAD is proud to offer artists resources\, support\, and space to create in Miami. This artist residency invites the public to step into the studio and observe and interact with the artist at work\, promoting conversations about process\, multidisciplinary artmaking\, and the role of the artist within learning institutions. \nRefreshments will be served. \nFree parking is available at MDC’s Padrón Campus flat parking lot located at 2501 SW 6TH Street\, Miami\, FL 33135. \nIn the artist’s own words: \nPulling from autobiographical sources\, my installations\, sculpture\, painting\, photography\, and film are very specific to my perspective as an immigrant while also addressing broader cultural concerns. As I seek to blur the line between art and life\, every subject and material can be included in my work\, no matter how quotidian. From the mounds of cardboard found on the factory floors of past employment which become relief sculptures\, or the shopping lists quickly scribbled onto my hand that I photograph and reuse in my practice\, I find truth and meaning in the overlooked. Daily encounters with text\, language\, and material become fodder for symbolic interpretations. \nImage: Gonzalo Hernandez\, Dentro de mi corazón hay otro corazón que sueña\, creo que ese corazón es mi verdadero corazón_LH\, 2024. SUMMARY:MOAD Artist Residency Open Studio Featuring Lucia Morales
DESCRIPTION:Join MOAD for an open studio featuring Miami-based artist Lucia Morales on Tuesday\, July 1. Throughout the summer term\, Morales will create new work and engage with students\, campus groups\, and members of the public during her artist residency at MDC’s Kendall Campus Art Gallery. \nLucia Morales is a Peruvian artist who lives and works in Miami. Born in Lima\, Morales moved to United States with her family at a young age. Influenced deeply by her cultural heritage\, she seeks to reconnect to Ayacucho\, a city nestled in the Andean Mountains\, where her family is from. \nAs a multidisciplinary artist and educator\, Morales examines themes of place and investigates how migration and immigration reshape notions of identity through painting\, textiles\, video performance\, and installation. Informed by her family and Andean culture and history\, Morales practices Peruvian folkloric dance weekly\, which for her serves as a form of resistance\, aiming to maintain her roots and traditions alive within her community. \nMorales holds a Master of Fine Art\, MA in Art Education and a BA in Landscape Architecture from Florida international University. She has worked and collaborated as an art educator with Miami-Dade and Broward public schools and with institutions such as The Wolfsonian and the Museum of Contemporary Art\, North Miami. \nMOAD is proud to offer artists resources\, support\, and space to create in Miami. This artist residency will also invite the public to step into the studio and observe and interact with the artist at work\, promoting conversations about process\, multidisciplinary artmaking\, and the role of the artist within learning institutions. \nMOAD’s programs are made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council\, the Miami-Dade County Mayor\, and Board of County Commissioners.
