SUMMARY:MOAD Makes Ceramics with Polo Ramírez
DESCRIPTION:Join MOAD for a hands-on artmaking workshop led by ceramic artist Polo Ramírez. Trained by his parents and grandparents in traditional pottery of the Vicús and the Tallán\, Ramírez’s approach emphasizes the human touch. He abstains from using pottery wheels and other machinery. This workshop will engage visitors in handbuilding techniques to create bird whistles inspired by the Chilalo\, a bird from northern Perú that is legendary for teaching pottery-making to the regions people. \nMOAD is teaming up with the Ceramic League of Miami (CLM) to bring this art experience to the South Florida community. With a special focus in ceramic arts\, CLM prioritizes access and inclusion\, creating environments that are tailored to various experience levels. This month\, MOAD Makes will pay tribute to the ancient teachings of the Chilalo\, a tradition that Ramírez has championed into present day art spaces. \nThis program is inspired by Miami Dade College’s Kislak Collection. \nFree parking available onsite on a first come\, first serve basis. \nOpen to ages 12 and above. \nImage: Studio of Polo Ramírez. Photo by Sierra Manno. \nThe Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC may document the event\, including its attendees. By entering the area\, and/or participating in the event\, you consent to the recording and its use in any form. \nMOAD’s programs are made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council\, the Miami-Dade County Mayor\, and Board of County Commissioners. They are sponsored in part by the State of Florida\, Department of State\, Division of Arts and Culture\, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture\, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation\, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Miami Herald is a media sponsor of MOAD’s programming. \nMiami Dade College is an equal access/ equal opportunity institution which does not discriminate on the basis of sex\, race\, color\, marital status\, age\, religion\, national origin\, disability\, veteran’s status\, ethnicity\, pregnancy\, sexual orientation\, or genetic information. To obtain additional information about the College’s equal access and equal opportunity policies\, procedures\, and practices\, please contact the College’s Equity Officer: Cindy Lau Evans\, Director\, Office of Equal Opportunity Programs and ADA Coordinator at (305) 237-2577 (Voice) or 711 (Relay Service). 11011 SW 104 St.\, Room 1102-01; Miami\, FL 33176.
