American Heritage Schools to Host “Stand Up for Innocence,” a Night of Stand-Up Comedy to Benefit the Wrongfully Convicted in Florida’s Prisons

February 1 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

$30 – $100.

On Saturday, Feb. 1, American Heritage Schools and its Honors Legal Studies program is pleased to once again partner with The Innocence Project of Florida (IPF) to host its sixth annual comedy event series, “Stand Up for Innocence,” at the school’s Broward Campus. This is a fun-filled night featuring stand-up comedians who frequently appear on Comedy Central and at NYC Comedy Clubs. The evening will entail levity and laughs to raise money for The Innocence Project of Florida – a nonprofit organization that aims to help innocent prisoners in Florida obtain their freedom and rebuild their lives.

All proceeds from the Stand Up for Innocence comedy show will provide critical funding to help IPF find and free innocent people from prison in Florida. The organization’s litigation efforts and support services for freed people are provided at no cost to the wrongfully convicted.

The event will feature three comedians including Lowell Sanders, Kimberly Clark and Matt Donaher. An incredibly versatile and accomplished comedian, Sanders has emerged as a premier headliner at venues nationwide. His unique blend of comedy is provocative and most importantly real. A highly regarded comedian, Clark uses dry humor and her captivating presence to train a precision lens on pop culture, politics, personal experiences and the absurdity of everyday life. She has been seen on “Lopez Tonight,” “Last Comic Standing,” “The Late Late Show,” “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” and Netflix. Comedian and writer Donaher has performed on CONAN multiple times. Donaher was also staffed on Demetri Martin’s show, “Our Fascinating Planet,” for Funny or Die, served as head writer for Fuse TV’s “Uproarious,” served as co-head writer for The Comedy Network’s “All Access Live,” and wrote and provided a voiceover for Jonathan Katz’s series “Explosion Bus.”

This past year, all of IPF’s dedication brought significant success, freedom and hope to four individuals and their families. IPF helped bring home Willie Williams, Jr., Leo Schofiled, Jr., Randy Seal and Billy Holton. Together, these men spent 125 years wrongfully incarcerated for crimes they did not commit. Each of these cases represents someone who was ripped from society, separated from their family, and sentenced to die in prison. But, with the community’s support, IPF was able to rectify these miscarriages of justice and give them a chance at a new life in freedom.

American Heritage Schools offers an excellent Pre-Law program, which is a four-year honors program taught exclusively by practicing attorneys and judges. Each year students take unique law school-level courses that no other high school offers, such as Trial Advocacy, Constitutional Law, Homicide Law and Criminal Law. The program culminates in a senior year internship when students experience the practice of law in real life. Seniors leave campus a few times per week to rotate through different law firms, agencies, offices and courtrooms throughout South Florida. The connections that the seniors make with practicing judges and attorneys are invaluable and often result in future law school clerkships and internships.
