The One Card Every Book Bee Uses

Dear Hive,

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and the Hive is fully on board. With a book club that fills up every month, we’ve got a serious soft spot for the Miami-Dade Public Library System. Ask any Book Bee, and she’ll tell you the card is the real MVP: free ebooks and audiobooks on Libby and Hoopla, streaming movies and music, digital newspapers and magazines, homework help for the kids, and free passes to local museums and attractions. Not bad for something that costs nothing. If yours is buried in a drawer somewhere, consider this your nudge. Speaking of book club, we hosted another great one last night. Scroll down for photos and October’s details. Plus, the hottest ticket in town just became available. Wild About Miami tickets are live below, and you’ll want to snag yours first.

YOUR MIAMI SPICE ERA STARTS HERE

Consider this your sign to make the reservation. This Miami Spice, Mamey brings tropical flavors, craveable plates and lush surroundings made for lingering. At The Collab, dinner turns into a night out with bold flavors, beautiful cocktails and an atmosphere that keeps you at the table a little longer. Two restaurants. Two distinct moods. One very good reason to indulge. Miami Spice Dinner is $65 per person. Come for dinner. Stay for the night.

MIAMI, MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS

Leaf is a free community calendar for Miami. It is not another list of events. Neighbors use it to plan small get-togethers and actually go out together, usually to a spot a few blocks away. Pick a day, see who is in, and a quiet Tuesday at a neighborhood restaurant turns into a full table. The Miami calendar is free to join. Add a get-together, or find one worth showing up to. Pick a day. Find your people.

MEET THE MIAMI WOMAN BEHIND FEMCITY

Violette de Ayala started her first business at 22, so she knew how to build something from nothing, and she knew how to network. What surprised her was how lonely the networking felt. After moving back to Miami, she kept leaving networking events wondering where the real connection was, and eventually she stopped looking for a group that didn’t exist and built it herself. In 2009 she invited a handful of friends to lunch and pitched them an idea. The following month, more than 60 women signed up. That lunch became FemCity, the Miami-born membership community for women in business that now reaches members across the US and Canada. Violette is a Cuban-American entrepreneur, speaker, and author whose insight lands regularly in Forbes, Entrepreneur, CNBC, and Success, and she runs all of it on a principle she calls success with soul. She’s just as candid these days about midlife, silver hair, and aging on her own terms. If you’re building something and quietly doing it alone, she’s your person. Find her HERE.

YOU GET FIRST DIBS ON TICKETS

Our third annual signature luncheon is heading to the water’s edge in the Grove on Thursday, October 22, for an afternoon of lunch, bubbly, fabulous photo opps, and a room full of Miami’s finest. Tickets are available now! This newsletter gets first access, and the last two luncheons sold out. So let’s make a splash together as we celebrate the importance of Miami’s water. Click this LINK to find out what to wear, how to get on the list, and more.

FREE BOOKS STRAIGHT TO YOUR KINDLE

Here’s the pairing that makes your library card even better. Borrow an ebook on Libby, send it straight to your Kindle, and read it without spending a dime. The Paperwhite is waterproof for pool days, glare-free in Florida sun, and holds thousands of titles in something lighter than a paperback. Book Bees, this one’s for you. We’ve added it to our Amazon storefront as a Hive-approved pick, affiliate link and all.

AN EVENING WITH A FOUNDING MOTHER

There’s something about a room full of women engaging over a woman who lived 250 years ago. Authors Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie hand Abigail Adams the spotlight she’s been owed, and our group had plenty to say about what she asked for and what she actually got. The wine flowed, the lite bites disappeared, and the conversation was equal parts smart and funny. Thank you to Alpha School Miami for partnering with us, to The Collab for taking care of us, and to every woman who showed up. If you’ve been meaning to join us, this is your sign.

MEET MAD MABEL, OUR NEXT READ

Our next Book Club pick is Mad Mabel by Sally Hepworth, so consider this your save the date. Elsie Fitzpatrick is eighty-one, gloriously grumpy, and minding her own business in a quiet Melbourne suburb until a neighbor turns up dead and the whispers start. Because Elsie hasn’t always been Elsie. Decades ago she was Mad Mabel, the youngest person in Australian history convicted of murder. But was she mad, or just a girl nobody bothered to understand? We’re finalizing the venue now and will share the location soon. Save the date, start reading, and we’ll handle the rest.

HOUSEKEEPER AVAILABLE | BY ASHLEY CUETO | REPLY

Isela is available to work Monday and Friday. She does not speak English or drive, but she is a good cleaner and a hard worker. She also does windows and irons. You can reach her 786-589-0158.
