The second annual Brunching for Breakthroughs, a student-created event benefiting the programs at Breakthrough Miami, brought the community together for a lively and inspiring brunch at THesis Hotel Miami. THE WOMAN WHO SAVED THE EVERGLADES
During Women’s History Month, it’s worth remembering a woman whose impact on South Florida is enormous. Marjory Stoneman Douglas was a journalist, author, and environmental advocate who helped change the world’s perception of the Everglades. Douglas reframed the entire conversation when she published The Everglades: RIver of Grass in 1947. Before her novel came out, many people still viewed the wetlands as a useless swamp that should be drained for development. She described the Everglades as a slow-moving river and a vital ecosystem that protects South Florida’s water and wildlife. Her writing and advocacy sparked a movement that ultimately helped protect the Everglades and influenced generations of environmental policy. Even more remarkable, she continued her activism well into her later years, founding the Friends of the Everglades at age 79 and speaking out for conservation into her 90s. Thanks in part to her determination, the Everglades remain one of South Florida’s most treasured natural landscapes today. It’s a powerful reminder that Miami’s history isn’t just shaped by builders and developers, but also by the women who fought to protect the place we call home.
