what pride month means to me

It’s June, which means it’s that time of year again. No, not the start of Miami’s rainy season—although that’s true too.

It’s the start of Pride Month. The time of year when rainbows magically appear everywhere and conversations turn to celebration, community, and visibility. But beyond the parades, glitter, and rainbow attire, what’s Pride really about?

Historically, Pride commemorates the Stonewall Uprising of 1969, when patrons of the Stonewall Inn stood up against discrimination demanding to be treated with the dignity and equality they deserved. What started as an incident in NYC for LGBTQ+ rights has since gone global..

Today, Pride’s not just remembering history. It’s a moment to reflect out loud (pun totally intended) on the importance of living authentically and embracing who we are. While Pride holds special significance for the LGBTQ+ community, its message resonates beyond. Ultimately, it’s about reminding us everyone wants to be seen, respected, and accepted for who they are.

In a world of algorithms that often seek to put us in a box, Pride celebrates individuality, self-expression, and the courage it takes to live openly and honestly.

So this Pride Month, whether you’re slapping on the glitter for a parade or supporting your local drag brunch, don’t forget the true meaning of Pride – authenticity. After all, being true to yourself is what Pride is really all about…even if you do add on some fake eyelashes.
