Updated October 2026
Halloween in Miami means costumes, candy, and neighborhoods buzzing with little ghosts and goblins. Whether you’re trick-or-treating in Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, South Miami, or your own neighborhood, a little planning can help make the evening safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Before heading out on October 31, review these Halloween safety tips with your family.
PLAN AHEAD
- Accompany younger children. Make sure little ones have a responsible adult with them while trick-or-treating.
- Choose your route. Stick to familiar neighborhoods and well-lit streets, and establish a meeting spot in case anyone gets separated.
- Set a return time. Older children going out with friends should know when to be home and how to reach you.
- Stay together. Encourage children to travel in groups and never enter a stranger’s home or vehicle.
MAKE COSTUMES SAFE
- Be visible. Add reflective tape to costumes and treat bags, and bring flashlights or glow sticks for darker streets.
- Keep sightlines clear. Choose face paint over masks that obstruct vision, and make sure costumes don’t drag on the ground.
- Choose comfortable shoes. Halloween involves more walking than most children expect, even in the cutest costume.
PRACTICE STREET SAFETY
- Cross at intersections and crosswalks whenever possible.
- Look both ways before crossing, and watch for cars entering or leaving driveways.
- Keep phones down and heads up while walking.
- Remind children to walk, not run, between houses.
- Drivers should slow down and stay especially alert in residential neighborhoods.
KEEP MIAMI WEATHER IN MIND
October evenings in South Florida can still be warm and humid. Bring water, choose breathable costumes when possible, and check the forecast before leaving home. If thunderstorms are expected, adjust your plans accordingly.
CHECK THE CANDY
Wait until you get home to enjoy the Halloween haul. An adult should inspect treats, discard anything with damaged or open packaging, and check ingredients for food allergies. Keep chocolate and other candy safely away from pets.
A LITTLE PLANNING GOES A LONG WAY
The best Halloween memories are made when everyone can focus on the fun. A few simple precautions help ensure that the biggest scare of the night comes from the decorations, not an avoidable accident.
